Whether it is a breakdown, a drop, a purchase in another province or a track day, we move motorcycles across Lleida with the individual securing each type of bike needs. A cruiser, a faired sports bike and a scooter are not strapped the same way, and that difference shows on arrival.

Lleida works as a road junction, which helps on long-distance moves: you can leave in several directions without detours. The bottleneck is not getting out of the city but collecting within it.

Moving a vehicle in Lleida: what to know

Lleida is a regular destination for our work, and it comes with conditions of its own. Lleida is the junction between the Ebro valley and the Pyrenees, on the A-2 and AP-2. The area's agri-food industry generates heavy commercial vehicle traffic.

Reaching the Lleida Pyrenees means mountain roads with real winter conditions.

Cover and liability during transport

A properly run move records the vehicle's condition before loading, normally photographically, and records it again at delivery. That evidence is what settles any later disagreement quickly.

It is worth confirming the company holds the relevant transport authorisation with the Spanish Ministry of Transport and a current policy. That is the difference between a professional service and someone with a hired trailer.

After a fall: what to check before riding on

A bike that has gone down usually shows damage on one side — lever, footpeg, fairing or exhaust. What matters is what cannot be seen, particularly if the impact was frontal or the front wheel struck a kerb.

Before loading, we check whether the wheel turns freely and whether the steering moves through its full travel. If either fails, loading needs additional equipment.

Loading and unloading

Loading is where most motorcycle transport damage happens. It needs a ramp at a sensible angle, a non-slip surface and, on heavy bikes, more than one person or a winch system.

Improvising getting a 200-kilo motorcycle up a narrow ramp is the most frequent way for a machine to be dropped during the operation. That is precisely the risk a professional service removes.

Groups, clubs and dealerships

For motorcycle dealers and workshops, recurring moves are part of operations — showroom units, trade-ins, machines in for repair. Planning in batches optimises the cost.

Where several bikes share a destination, grouping them reduces the total appreciably. Where destinations differ but lie on the same route, that can usually be optimised too.

Access restrictions in central Lleida usually run to specific time bands, and knowing them allows collection to be planned for the right moment.

Moving the bike without riding the miles

There are plenty of reasons to move a bike by truck rather than ride it: a purchase in another province, a house move, getting it to a holiday destination, or simply avoiding adding a thousand kilometres to a valuable machine.

On long journeys the saving is not only wear. You avoid the fatigue, the risk of a long ride on open roads and, in winter, conditions that make the trip genuinely unpleasant.

Not all motorcycles travel the same way

Weight matters too. A loaded adventure bike with panniers can comfortably exceed 250 kilos, and manhandling that up a ramp is neither reasonable nor safe for anyone.

On fully faired bikes it is worth removing or protecting the most exposed parts before transport. A mirror or indicator broken by contact during loading is the most avoidable kind of damage there is.

What it costs to move a bike

Price depends on distance, the type of machine, whether it rolls, and how accessible the collection is. A bike that rolls and can be pushed to the truck is the cheapest scenario.

Moving a motorcycle usually costs less than a car for the space it occupies, and grouping several reduces the unit cost further. It is worth asking whether a route to the destination is already planned.

The legal position: when transport stops being optional

A vehicle without a valid ITV, without insurance, or on temporary deregistration cannot legally be driven on public roads. The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is unambiguous here, and the penalty falls on the registered keeper. Moving it by truck is not a matter of preference — it is the only lawful option.

Royal Decree 920/2017 governing the ITV roadworthiness test sets out the narrow circumstances in which a vehicle may travel to a test station, and outside that specific case driving it is prohibited. That distinction is worth understanding before assuming you can drive to the garage.

Things to check before booking

If the move is a private sale, coordinate payment and key handover clearly. The carrier moves the vehicle; it takes no part in the transaction.

Leave the fuel tank low, around a quarter. It reduces weight, follows standard transport practice, and there is nothing to gain from a full tank during the journey.

If you are selling the vehicle and the buyer arranges transport, put in writing when responsibility passes. It is normally at key handover, but both parties benefit from having it stated.

Keep the job documentation recording the vehicle's condition. It is the reference point if a question about damage and its timing comes up later.

Always ask whether the price covers collection and delivery at the points you need, or refers to a terminal-to-terminal move. The difference in cost and convenience is considerable.

If the vehicle is in an underground car park, check the clearance height first. Many garages cannot take a transporter and the car has to be brought up to street level.

If the vehicle will sit on a public street waiting for collection, check there are no timed restrictions or scheduled clearing on that road. A car towed by the local authority while waiting for transport complicates matters considerably and adds costs nobody planned for.

If the vehicle is on rural land or at the end of an unsurfaced track, state the distance from the tarmac road. An articulated truck cannot enter every lane, and sometimes the car has to be brought out to a meeting point.

Open transporters are the standard option and perfectly safe for most vehicles. Enclosed transport makes sense for classics, high-value cars and anything with very low ground clearance.

On classic vehicles with carburettors or older systems, say whether the engine needs any particular starting procedure. If it has to be moved even a few metres, that information saves time.

Have the vehicle and ownership documents ready. On moves ending at a port terminal or crossing a border, that paperwork matters as much as the vehicle itself.

Get the name and number of the driver handling the job, or at least a direct operational contact. On the day, being able to resolve a question in two minutes prevents an hour of waiting.

If you will not be present at collection or delivery, put in writing who hands over and who receives the keys, with a phone number. This is the single most common cause of avoidable delay.

A vehicle leaking oil or fuel should be flagged before transport. It does not prevent the move, but it affects where the car sits on the deck and what protection goes underneath it.

If you need the vehicle by a fixed, immovable date, say so when booking rather than afterwards. With enough notice it can almost always be accommodated; with twenty-four hours, often not.

An accessible collection point saves both time and money. If the street is narrow or the garage has restricted headroom, agreeing a nearby spot where the truck can manoeuvre simplifies everything.

If the vehicle has any quirk — lowered suspension, an automatic gearbox locked in park, a flat battery — mention it when requesting the quote so the right equipment turns up.

If the vehicle has been in an accident, say what is damaged and whether the wheels still turn. A vehicle that will not roll needs a winch and sometimes dollies.

Keep the job reference or delivery note. If you later need to evidence the move to an insurer, a workshop or the authorities, that document proves when and how the vehicle was moved.

Realistic timescales depend on distance and route, not optimism. A company that promises any deadline without asking where the vehicle is probably will not meet it.

Moving several vehicles together usually works out considerably cheaper per unit than separate jobs. If you have more than one to move, it is worth quoting them as one.

If the vehicle contains fuel cans or any flammable material, remove it beforehand. Dangerous goods transport is governed by its own regulations and cannot travel mixed in with the vehicle.

For vehicles with bulky modifications or accessories — roof racks, bike carriers, bull bars — mention them. They can affect the overall height of the loaded truck and whether it clears certain access points.

Ask whether the price includes waiting time at loading and unloading. On moves to workshops, dealerships or compounds with slow procedures, that time can stretch, and it is worth knowing in advance how it is counted.

If the destination is an ITV test station, confirm you have a booked appointment and the time. Matching the vehicle's arrival to the appointment slot avoids long waits and a second visit.

In low-emission zones, verify whether the transport truck can enter during the planned time window. Many restrictions apply to heavy vehicles even where the car being carried would itself be allowed through.

Before confirming, check the quote is fixed rather than an estimate subject to surcharges. Extras for difficult access or a non-rolling vehicle should be clear from the outset.

Battery condition matters even for a transport job. If the vehicle has to move a few metres under its own power to get out of a garage or a parking bay, a live battery saves time and avoids resorting to auxiliary equipment.

Check the overall height if the vehicle is a van, a camper or a 4x4 with roof accessories. The vehicle's height plus the deck height determines what the loaded truck can pass under.

If the move includes a sea crossing, check what documentation the ferry operator requires for the vehicle. The registration document and owner details are usually needed, and a missing paper means missing the sailing.

In summary

If you need a vehicle moved in Lleida, the most useful thing is an assessment of your specific situation. We give you a total price and a realistic timescale, not a per-kilometre rate that grows later.
